Now you are a mother. You have changed physically and emotionally. Yoga can really help you feel confident about handling your new responsibilities and keep you grounded. Pranayama (breathing practice) can energise you after an interrupted night’s sleep and the postures can support you physically and help balance your hormones, calming their vibrating pulse.

Vicky’s mother and baby yoga classes are designed to help you regain health, vitality and strength after the transition of pregnancy and birth:

  1. The classes will focus on strengthening the pelvic floor to revitalise the muscles and help you retrieve perineal sensation and correct any incontinence.
  2. The classes will focus on releasing tension from the neck and shoulders as these areas become tight and inflexible as a result of feeding and carrying your baby.
  3. Each class aims to explore postures that strengthen the back to adapt the muscles to the demands of bending down towards your baby and all of the postures help to maintain a healthy functioning central nervous system.
  4. A loss of endurance is commonplace after pregnancy and birth and many of the yoga postures work directly on increasing stamina on a physical and psychological level.
  5. Diminished abdominal tone is a concern for most women after the birth of their baby. Vicky has devised an effective abdominal program using a unique sequence of postures that are both safe and supportive for the lower back.
  6. Vicky is also aware that you need restorative poses to aid fatigue during the first few months of motherhood so although she tries to make each class an energising experience she is always mindful of using poses that also promote renewal and regeneration.

During the class baby may rest in a baby chair or lie on your mat. Vicky encourages you to soothe baby if they become unsettled during the class. Sometimes the class can be a start and stop experience but this is the nature of motherhood and it is important to remember this and surrender to your baby's needs. Vicky embraces babies into the practice session by showing how to use yoga postures to relieve colic and crying. The class always closes with a melodic chants which your baby is sure to love!
